CITU Condemns Slapping of ESMA on Striking Haryana Employees

THE Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has condemned the imposition of the draconian Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) on the employees of the Haryana State Electricity Board by the BJP-led government.CITU has extended total support to the employees who have been compelled to go on a two days’ strike against the decision of the state government to privatise 23 electricity distribution subdivisions with the highest revenue potential.

Himachal Pradesh: Workers Protest against Contractors-Govt Nexus

CITU-affiliated workers at the under-construction 450-MW Shong Thong-Karchham hydroelectric project on Sutlej river have been on strike for the last three months over several demands, including payment of wages. Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd. (HPPCL) is constructing this power project through Patel Engineering Ltd., which has further sublet works to more than 20 local contractors.

CITU Calls for Extensive Campaign to Make Sept 2 Strike a Success

THE Centre of Indian Trade Unions has called upon all state committees, federations and unions to intensify the campaign to make the September 2 general strike against the anti-people and anti-worker policies of the Narendra Modi government successful. CITU, in its national secretariat meeting held on June 13-14 in New Delhi, reviewed the preparatory campaign activities being undertaken in the states and industries in the run-up to the strike.

CITU Condemns Govt Move to Induct Pvt Sector Managements in Central PSUs

A FEW days back, the Narendra Modi government has amended the Public Sector Recruitment Rules retrospectively providing for appointment of candidates from the private sector, to very senior management positions in the central public sector undertakings and also in the PESB (Public Sector Enterprise Selection Board). Obviously, the profit-making blue chip PSUs are the target of the Modi government in this regard. The government's argument is that this will help CPSUs in getting ‘capable and efficient’ hands from the private sector.

Protect State Road Transport Corporations: AIRTWF

IT is reported in the press that the government of India has taken a decision to give 40 percent subsidy for individuals who wish to purchase a bus. The All India Road Transport Workers Federation, in a statement issued on June 1, has strongly condemned this decision of the union government and has demanded that the state road transport corporations be extended 40 percent subsidy. They are providing transport facilities to the remote areas, that too at an affordable fare, as a result of which, particularly, the downtrodden sections of the society are benefited.

Inhumane Working Conditions of the Loco Running Staff

THE All India Loco Running Staff Association has written to the minister of railways, Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu on the reigning hot summer in our country and its adverse effect on the safety, health and work place environment of the loco pilots of Indian railway. According to the reports of the meteorological department, an increase of about 2 degrees to 6 degrees centigrade above normal in atmospheric temperature has been recorded in our country during this summer season compared to the past and it is anticipated that the condition would prevail until the arrival of normal monsoon.

ANDHRA PRADESH: Bizarre Accidents Result in a Nightmare for Workers in the Construction of Capital City

22-year-old construction worker named Devendra, from Jharkhand, was killed in an accident at the AP temporary secretariat complex construction site at Velagapudi village on May 10 where a Government Interim Complex (temporary secretariat) is being constructed.The incident took place when the worker was cleaning a cement mixer with a crow bar. He was trying to clean the inside of the drum when he was sucked in and got crushed to death. It has emerged later that the worker was not wearing the mandatory crash helmet.
