IT was a memorial meeting with a difference. In fact, it was a celebration of the extra-ordinary rich life of a multi-faceted personality, Leftist thinker, and finance minister in the Left Front goverment of West Bengal, columnist, author, academician, planner, and bureaucrat – all rolled into one. The meeting took place at the Constitution Club, New Delhi on May 26.

CPI(M) Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on May 30

THE Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) mourns the passing away of Comrade Jakka Venkaiah, veteran leader of the Party in Andhra Pradesh and a former member of the Central Committee.

Jakka Venkaiah played a key role in building the Communist Party in Nellore district. He began the agricultural workers organisation and led many struggles.

RICH tributes were paid to Comrade P Sundarayya, the founder-general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), on the occasion of his 33rd death anniversary. Delivering Sundarayya Memorial Lecture on Law, Courts and Society, at a function organised by Sundarayya Vignana Kendram at Baghlingampally in Hyderabad on May 19, Justice B P Jeevan Reddy, a former judge of the Supreme Court, explained that Sundarayya, through his simplicity and life-style, continued to be a source of inspiration for the present-day generation.

Police Firing on People in TN

CPI(M)  Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on May 23, 2018

THE Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly condemns the police firing on people protesting against the Sterlite Copper Industry in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, which has led to the death of twelve people and injuries to over a hundred. The brutality of the state police is revealed by the fact that many of those killed and injured have bullet injuries on their heads and faces.

Venezuela Elections – Overcoming Odds, Maduro Triumphs

VENEZUELAN President Nicolas Maduro was re-elected as the president on May 20, with 6.2 million votes, beating out his closest rival Henri Falcon, who secured 1.9 million votes. Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) announced the result stating that Maduro had won with 67.79 per cent of all votes cast, ahead of Henri Falcon, who won 21.01 per cent. Due to a boycott announced by the main opposition parties of the right-wing Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) coalition, the turnout was 46 per cent, with only 9,085,629 of Venezuela’s 20,527,571 registered voters casting ballots.
