G Veeraiyan

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) pays homage to the memory of Comrade G Veeraiyan, former member of the Tamil Nadu state committee of the Party who died on November 18. He was 86.

Born into a share-cropping peasant family in 1932, Comrade GV studied upto fourth standard. He was one of the members of the Co-ordination Committee to form the CPI(M) in Tamil Nadu. Veeraiyan served in various positions in the Party in the erstwhile Thanjavur district, in the Party state committee and state secretariat. He was also a member of the CKC of the All India Kisan Sabha and was the general secretary of Tamil Nadu Kisan Sabha for a very long time and also served as general secretary and president of the Agricultural Workers Union. He was twice elected to Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Nagapattinam constituency.

As secretary of the erstwhile Thanjavur district of the Party, Comrade GV was one of the leaders who mobilised the peasantry, facing severe state repression. He played a leading role in organising the peasantry and rural people in resisting attacks at the time of the Keezhvenmani Massacre, (in which 44 people belonging to dalit families were burnt alive on December 25, 1968).

Amit Sengupta

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) pays homage to the memory of Dr Amit Sengupta, a leading figure in the people’s science and public health movements. He died in tragic circumstances in Goa on November 28.  He was 60.

Amit Sengupta joined the Party in 1979 as a student activist. He played a key role in formulating the Party’s policies on the popular science campaign and on public health. He was the convener of the All India Popular Science Committee of the Party. He was the former general secretary of the All India People’s Science Network and convener of the Jan Swastya Abhiyan (People’s Health Movement). A regular contributor to the ‘Science and Development’ column of People’s Democracy, he had also written extensively on public health and science issues. He led movements against Patents (Amendment) Act and got amendments which are significant as established by the Supreme Court.

Mushirul Hasan

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) pays homage to the memory of noted historian Mushirul Hasan.

Former vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia University, Prof. Hasan blended all the fine qualities of our syncretic culture and scholarship.

Ramen Poddar

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) pays homage to the memory of Comrade Ramen Poddar, scientist and former vice chancellor of Calcutta University. He also represented the CPI(M) in the Rajya Sabha for a term.

Sean Garland

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) pays homage to the memory of Comrade Sean Garland, veteran leader of the Workers Party, Ireland. He died on December 13, 2018 aged 84.

As president of the Workers Party, Sean Garland played a significant role in building the Workers Party over the decades. At the time of his death he was a member of the Central Executive Committee of the party.
