Haryana: CPI(M) State Convention Calls for Intensifying Struggles
THE Haryana state committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) organised a state convention in Rohtak, on July 27. Party general secretary, M A Baby, addressed the convention on the topic “Current Political Situation and the Left.” The meeting was presided over by state secretariat member Inderjeet Singh and conducted by Party state secretary Prem Chand.
At the outset, the meeting paid homage to Comrade V S Achuthanandan, former Polit Bureau member of the CPI(M) and former chief minister of Kerala.
Presenting the situation in Haryana, Party state secretary Prem Chand said that women, dalits, and minorities were facing growing problems in the state. Crimes against these sections were on the rise, with many incidents of rape and murder of young girls coming to light. He noted that Muslim Bengali-speaking people were being harassed by the police across Haryana. Livelihood issues were also intensifying, with inflation and unemployment at their peak. The price of mustard oil available at ration depots had increased by 150 per cent, and civic amenities such as water and electricity were being privatised. Smart electricity meters were being installed. He announced that in the coming days, the Party would launch a campaign on these issues.
Addressing the gathering, CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby said that 26 innocent people were killed in the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. This horrific massacre was condemned across the world, but, he added, the sad reality was that after the incident, the prime minister, instead of going to Pahalgam, chose to attend an election rally in Bihar. He accused the RSS and BJP of using the tragedy for communal polarisation by launching a campaign to blame Muslims and the Kashmiri people. While the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly convened a session and strongly condemned the attack, the central government refused to discuss it in Parliament despite repeated demands by the opposition.
He accused the BJP-RSS of running a “poisonous campaign of hatred,” targeting Bengali-speaking Muslims by branding them as Bangladeshis and harassing them through the police. This, he said, was part of a larger attempt to turn religious faith into communal poison and impose fascism. He alleged that the Election Commission’s SIR process in Bihar – “Special Illegal Removal” – was aimed at deleting anti-BJP voters. Criticising the government for bowing to American imperialism, he said India’s independent foreign policy was being eroded.
CPI(M) Central Secretariat member K Hemalata congratulated everyone on the historic success of the nationwide strike on July 9. She said crores of people – including workers, employees, and common citizens – had come out on the streets to express their anger against the government’s policies. She noted that, in the name of “ease of doing business,” the central government is now pressuring states to implement anti-worker labour codes. She also congratulated the Samyukta Kisan Morcha for the historic farmers’ movement that led to the repeal of the agricultural laws. Hemalata emphasised that the Left and the CPI(M) are today the voice of the workers, farmers, and agricultural labourers of the country, fighting for their interests. In the days ahead, she said, there is a need to reverse the BJP government’s anti-people policies through joint and widespread mobilisation of farmers, workers, and agricultural labourers.
State Secretariat member Surender Singh, moving a proposal on Cuban solidarity, said socialist Cuba is a very small country, with a population smaller than that of Delhi. Yet, American imperialism has been so fearful of it that, for decades, it has maintained an economic blockade. Despite this, Cuba has made exemplary progress in many areas, proving that a just and humane world is possible even in the face of opposition from the world’s largest empire. Surender Singh highlighted that, despite all obstacles, socialist Cuba has provided all its citizens with high-quality higher education, free healthcare, and opportunities in sports, arts, and culture. Every year, the United Nations passes a resolution – overwhelmingly supported by member states –calling for an end to the blockade, with only the US and Israel opposing it. He said Cuba wins a moral victory over American imperialism each year and called for standing firmly with Cuba at this time. He appealed to all Party members to contribute generously to the Cuba Solidarity Fund.
On this occasion, Party state secretary Prem Chand handed over Rs 1 lakh to Party general secretary M A Baby for the Cuba Solidarity Fund.
