UP: CPI(M) Holds Statewide Protests Against Power Crisis

Nawab Uddin

On the call of the Uttar Pradesh state committee of the CPI(M), protests were held at the offices of superintending engineers of power corporations, holding the Yogi Adityanath government responsible for the severe power crisis in the state. Memorandums addressed to the chief minister were submitted as part of this agitation. Their demands included: The rollback of the 10 per cent increase in electricity tariffs; end to increasing power cuts and recurring faults; complete withdrawal of the smart meter scheme; cancellation of the privatisation of Dakshinanchal and Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam; and withdrawal of the Electricity Bill, 2025.

They also demanded the fulfilment of the BJP's election promise to provide 300 units of free electricity to all consumers and unconditional free electricity to farmers, permanent recruitment against vacant posts in the electricity department, and regularisation of contractual workers.

The memorandums further called for the replacement of dilapidated power lines, the immediate replacement of burnt transformers, an end to manipulation in meter billing, an end to illegal charges levied for the disconnection and reconnection of electricity supply, withdrawal of illegal surcharges, and ensuring 18 hours of electricity supply to farmers and 24-hour power supply in both urban and rural areas. The issue of low voltage and other related problems was also prominently raised.

The CPI(M) has been continuously campaigning across Uttar Pradesh against power sector privatisation and the smart meter scheme. The CPI(M) state committee, at its previous meeting, had decided to launch a broad public campaign on these issues and organise statewide protests on June 1.

According to early reports, demonstrations were held in more than 30 districts, including Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Bulandshahr, Saharanpur, Moradabad, Bijnor, Sultanpur, Rampur, Etawah, Meerut, Chitrakoot, Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Chandauli, Ballia, Deoria, Gonda, Ayodhya, Bahraich, Kushinagar, Jaunpur, Pratapgarh, Ghazipur, Farrukhabad, Kasganj, Mau and Etah.
