We Are Not Lovers of Darkness; We Seek to be Its Destroyer
Samik Lahiri
History is not a straight line; it is a rugged path where the eternal conflict between rise and fall, light and shadow, persists. The womb of Fascism breeds a dense, solidified darkness. The world today is passing through such a gloom, which political scientists identify as 'Neo-Fascism.' This is not merely the 1930s story of jackboots and concentration camps; its web is more expansive, and its death-grip more subtle. Thus, today’s struggle is not just of physical might, but parallelly, of the intellect and ideology.
NEO-FASCISM: THE MASK AND THE REALITY
Twentieth-century Fascism was easy to recognize. However, modern Neo-Fascism arrives draped in the robes of democracy. It usurps fundamental rights under the guise of 'development' or 'religious cloaks' and intoxicates the masses with the opium of 'hyper-nationalism.' Its primary weapons are fear and hatred. The greedy machines of this modern Yaksapuri (a reference to Tagore's 'Red Oleanders') do not just suck human labour; they control human thought through algorithms and Artificial Intelligence—forces invisible to the naked eye. When the human spine is bent and the line between truth and falsehood is erased, Neo-Fascism achieves its ultimate victory.
History bears witness—protest, rebellion, and revolution never fall from the sky. Behind every great change lies a well-organized ideological preparation. Neo-Fascism today injects inferiority and doubt into the human mind: "How much more blood? How many more defeats? Perhaps better days will never come." To resist this fallacy, we need more than emotion—we need a sharp political consciousness.
THE BATTLE FOR THE INTELLECT
There are crucial reasons why 'Intellectual Resistance' has become vital in today’s struggle:
1. Information Terrorism and Propaganda: Neo-Fascism seeks to erase historical consciousness with misinformation. By making us forget the history of human struggle, it plants seeds of despair, cultivating communalism and consumerism in those despondent minds. To stop this brainwashing, we must look back at history.
2. The Ideological Vacuum: No struggle lasts without an advanced philosophy of life. Just as in Raktakarabi (Red Oleanders) the character Bishu Pagol’s blood struck at the foundations of a decaying system, today, free-thinking and a scientific temper must be that fatal blow.
3. The Cultural Struggle: Fascism first attacks logic, science, and culture. They want people to forget how to question. Like the character Nandini, we must shatter the "arrogance of carved stone" through art, literature, and reason.
BENGAL’S DEFIANCE
This soil of Bengal has seen the Tebhaga struggle, the food movements, and the turbulent days of anti-imperialism. We are the successors of those who stood before cannons with nothing but sticks in their hands. Through consecutive mass movements, the people of this state have proved that the sound of breaking chains echoes loudest here. Today, some may have temporarily lost their way due to the arrogance of power, but when exploitation reaches its peak, people recognise their old friends—the comrades of the Red Flag. However, we must ensure that the 'cheap drama of changing seats' does not tarnish our struggle. A change of hands in power is not liberation. True liberation comes only when the seeds of exploitation are uprooted from the structure of society.
ROBERT BRUCE TO THE RED OLEANDERS
Remember the story of the Scottish King, Robert Bruce. In a damp cave, defeated seven times, he watched a tiny spider. It fell repeatedly, its web tore, but it did not stop. On the eighth attempt, it reached its goal. Bruce realized that in the dictionary of struggle, there is no such word as 'defeat'—it is merely the stubbornness of a new beginning.
In Rabindranath’s Raktakarabi (Red Oleanders), when workers were crushed by the stone walls of Yaksapuri, Nandini stood as the crimson banner of rebellion. Bishu gave his life, and the enemy thought it was over. But Bishu’s death was the first thunderclap that broke the iron gates; it was the mantra that ignited the wildfire in the hearts of the masses.
THE MARXIST TRUTH
Karl Marx taught us that society does not move in a straight line. It moves through dialectics. When the wheel of history turns, it sometimes appears to move backward. But that backward motion is actually the preparation for a long leap. Capitalism, despite its current bravado, carries the seeds of its own destruction.
Consider 1907 Russia. The Tsar had crushed the first revolution in blood. Despair was everywhere. Yet, through that darkness, Lenin said, "This is not a defeat; it is a dress rehearsal for the final victory." Similarly, during the Long March, Mao Zedong never lost heart despite being vastly outnumbered. He knew the path to a bright future might be winding, but that future was inevitable.
THE INEVITABLE MOTION OF HISTORY
Social science proves that no exploitative system is permanent. Slavery lasted four thousand years; Feudalism lasted fifteen hundred. People once thought those shadows would never lift, yet they were crushed under the wheels of history. Mussolini lasted 21 years; Hitler’s Nazi reign lasted only 12.
Today, the situation is different. There is no Soviet Union, no Stalin. The common people must fight this battle themselves, and the fight against Neo-Fascism will be longer than those of the past. It requires infinite patience. Blood is never shed in vain if it flows toward the correct goal.
NEED FOR SHARPENED INTELLECTS
When our fists rise toward the sky, the brains behind them must be sharpened. The red sun will surely pierce the darkness of Neo-Fascism. We must be the sleepless sentinels. A weak, timid, or vacillating army cannot win a war. To confront Neo-Fascism, we need party organisers who are active, strong, and as steady as spirited horses. Whether we are large or small in number is not the point—what matters is whether our strength is growing and our unshakeable conviction is that the powers of darkness are incapable of reigning eternally.
The victory of the masses is certain! Socialism is the future, and the future belongs to us.
