Fifty Years of Coup against Allende

FIFTY years ago, on September 11, 1973, the US succeeded in orchestrating a coup against the democratically elected Salvador Allende’s government in Chile. The Pinochet dictatorship foisted on the people assassinated thousands of communists, socialists, workers, artists and all those who were found to be actively supporting Allende. This violent terror was accompanied by the implementation of neoliberal policies, guided by the ‘Chicago boys’.

What’s Happening in Niger is Far From a Typical Coup

ON July 26, 2023, Niger’s presidential guard moved against the sitting president –Mohamed Bazoum – and conducted a coup d’état. A brief contest among the various armed forces in the country ended with all the branches agreeing to the removal of Bazoum and the creation of a military junta led by presidential guard commander general Abdourahamane “Omar” Tchiani. This is the fourth country in the Sahel region of Africa to have experienced a coup – the other three being Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali.

ON August 13th, a political tremor shook Argentina. Javier Milei, a far right politician pushed behind the contenders of the two established political parties in Argentina and emerged as the leader in the presidential primaries. Milei’s electoral gains were immediately acknowledged by almost all the far-right leaders of Latin America.The rising popularity of Milei in Argentina is one among the many instances that point towards the growing right-wing forces throughout the world. In Germany, we find the Alternative for Duestchland (AfD) gaining in strength.

Niger Is the Fourth Country in the Sahel to Experience an Anti-Western Coup

AT 3 am on July 26, 2023, the presidential guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum in Niamey, the capital of Niger. Troops, led by Brigadier General Abdourahmane Tchiani closed the country’s borders and declared a curfew. The coup d’état was immediately condemned by the Economic Community of West African States, by the African Union, and by the European Union. Both France and the United States – which have military bases in Niger – said that they were watching the situation closely.

ON Saturday, July 1, 2023, a large crowd gathered inside and around the Ibn Badis Mosque in Nanterre (France), where a seventeen-year-old boy, Nahel M, was mourned and then later buried. Nahel M, of Algerian and Tunisian heritage, was shot dead by a police officer during a traffic stop. It was clear that the police officer had not acted in self-defence but had shot the young man in cold blood. A wave of outrage swept through the country, with protests and riots breaking out across France.

ON June 9, 2023, four senior members of the US Congress – two Democrats (Gregory Meeks and Chris Coons) and two Republicans (James Risch and Michael McCaul) – wrote a letter to high officials of the administration of US President Joe Biden. The letter was about an annual forum to be held later this year in South Africa that is focused on increased trade between sub-Saharan African countries and the United States.

The War in Ukraine is between NATO and Russia

IN the first half of this year, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has travelled to eleven countries, twice to two of them (France and the United Kingdom). Last year, in 2022, Zelensky only went to three countries (Germany, Poland, and the United States). This year’s trips began with a visit to the United Kingdom, where Zelensky addressed the UK’s parliament and visited Ukrainian troops who are training at Lulworth Camp in Dorset. After that, Zelensky went to several European capitals to seek weapons and political support against Russia.
