Confluence of Culture, Intellectual, Political: 34th Safdar Hashmi Memorial

AFTER a gap of two covid years, the 34th Safdar Hashmi Memorial was observed at HKS Surjeet Bhawan on January1, 2023 – a unique confluence of cultural, intellectual and political. In the day-long programme there was music and poetry, books and calendar releases, tributes and a reminder that the end of the year 2022 marked 30 years of the demolition of the Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992 by the Hindutva hordes besmirching the republic.The cloth walls of the make-shift auditorium were decorated with colourful banners of verses written by Sufi-Bhakti poets and also by contemporary poets.

‘Safdar’s Passion was Social Change’

“I FIRST heard of Safdar Hashmi around 1970, when I joined the National School of Drama in New Delhi. All I wanted was fame and popularity, and I couldn’t understand how an artist as accomplished as Safdar would not care for that. Towards AIDWA’s National Conference: Struggle in Unity for Equality

THE 13th national conference of AIDWA is being held at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala from January 6 to 9,  2023 with the slogan, ‘Struggle in Unity for Equality’. Nearly 850 delegates from 25 states and union territories, representing a total membership of 96, 31,116 will deliberate and plan for building a stronger women’s movement and organisation in India. This is the second time that an AIDWA national conference is being held in Kerala.

I am glad that the Supreme Court after an inordinate delay of six years has taken up pleas on demonetisation to adjudicate. Tripura: anashiksha Divas Observed With Great Enthusiasm

ON December 27, 2022, the 78th Janashiksha Divas was observed throughout the state with great enthusiasm under the leadership of Tripura Rajya Upajati Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP, in short) and the CPI(M). Large number of tribal and non-tribal people participated in the observance programme at various places across the state. During this programme, Party flag was hoisted along with hoisting the GMP flag, followed by paying homage to the great leaders, who spearheaded the ‘people’s literacy movement’ in the state, in the 40s and 50s.
