CPI(M) Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on August 1

THE National Register of Citizens (NRC) was part of the Assam Accord which decided on the cut-off date of 1971 to determine the question of illegal migrants settled in Assam.  The work for preparing such a register did not proceed until the Supreme Court intervened and under its directions and supervision, the draft NRC has been prepared.

That Hand behind Water Privatisation

MONSOONS in our country give rise to varied emotions. Village dwellers will be looking forward to them eagerly and once they arrive, they greet them with great enthusiasm. On the other hand, city dwellers, look forward to them romantically and once they arrive, go on wishing them away, considering the water logging and related problems. In short, it is the management of water that is determining our attitude to rains.

NRC: Include All Indians

THE publication of the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam has caused widespread consternation as over four million (40 lakh) persons who had applied have not found a place in the Register.

The updating of the NRC of 1951 constitutes part of the implementation of the Assam Accord of 1985.  As per this Accord, March 24, 1971 was fixed as the cut-off date for determining those who came after that date to be illegal migrants.

Left Parties Call for Bihar Bandh on August 2

I ACCOMPANIED Bihar state secretary, Avdhesh Kumar, to Madhubani and Muzaffarpur districts on July 26-27.  What we witnessed was conclusive evidence of the fact that, after his treacherous deal with the BJP, Nitish Kumar has given up all attempts at good governance and Bihar today is no different from BJP-states as far as inhuman atrocities against women, minor girls and dalits are concerned.
