Cultural-Democratic Upsurge in Karnataka Post-Kalburgi Killing

AFTER the barbaric killing of scholar-writer M M Kalburgi at Dharwad on August 30, 2015, Karnataka has been witnessing an unprecedented cultural-democratic upsurge in order to put a stiff resistance to the draconian forces of religious fundamentalism. A shocked fraternity of literary and cultural fields, intellectuals and people from various sections of society did not stop at mere condemnation of the assassination of Dr.Kalburgi, but has been working persistently to build up a resistance movement to fundamentalist/obscurantist forces.

DSMM Demands Stringent Action into Attack on Dalit Family in Faridabad

Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch condemns the heinous incident of burning to death of a Dalit family in Faridabad in the early hours on October 20. Two year old Vaibhav, ten months old Divya died before reaching hospital in Delhi. Rekha, their mother is undergoing treatment in the ICU with serious injuries. Jitender Kumar, their father received burn injuries on his hands. Petrol was poured into their room, in which they were sleeping, through a window that was open and they were set alight.

DSMM Protests against Dankaur Atrocity on Dalit Family

Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch’s Delhi unit had organised a protest near Uttar Pradesh Bhavan in New Delhi on October 14. Activists who had gathered near the UP Bhavan for a sit-in were arrested by the Delhi police and taken to Chanakyapuri Police Station. After strong protests against this undemocratic step of the Delhi police, the DSMM was allowed to hold a protest demonstration at Teen Murti Circle. The demonstration was addressed by V Srinivas Rao, G Mamatha, Nathu Prasad, DSMM leaders and AIDWA Delhi secretary, Sehba Farooqui.

TELANGANA: Need for Sub Plan and Reservations for Minorities

GIVEN the dire socio-economic conditions of minorities in the country, there is urgent need to have a Sub Plan for them separately as also 12 per cent reservation in education and jobs. This was underscored by CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury who addressed a state-level convention on these two issues in Hyderabad on October 5th as chief guest. He criticised the Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao for not implementing his poll promise of providing 12 per cent reservations to minorities if voted to power.

Memo Submitted to NCW on Disabled Women’s Issues

THERE has been a manifold increase in the number of reported cases of sexual assaults against girls and women with disabilities. Considered as soft targets, disabled girls and women are more vulnerable to sexual assaults. While specific provisions are contained in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act as well as the amendments to the criminal laws post Verma Committee with regard to disabled girls and women, it is a matter of grave concern that provisions contained therein are not implemented at all or are not implemented in full.

Dalit Parliament Demands Special Session of Parliament

THE Dalit Parliament (public meeting) organised by the Dalit Shoshan Mukti Manch on September 20 at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi demanded the Government of India to enact laws providing reservations for dalits in the private sector, providing statutory status to the SC/ST Sub-Plan, to pass the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Bill 2015 in the winter session of parliament, to launch a special mission to eradicate untouchability and organise a nationwide special propaganda campaign against social oppression and caste discrimination.

They have absolute authority to punish any Muslim boy seen in public with a Hindu girl. In such cases, the Muslim boy is assaulted and humiliated in any way they please. The Hindu girl, too, is insulted, manhandled and threatened, all in order to protect her ‘honour’.

Kerala: Dalits Jatha from Kasaragode to Thiruvananthapuram Demands Reservation in Private Sector

HUNDREDS of Dalits from across Kerala participated in a 25-day long jatha from Kasaragode in the state’s north to Thiruvananthapuram in the south, under the banner of Pattikajathi Kshema Samithi (PKS). The march to the state secretariat started from the northernmost district of Kasargode on July 26 and reached Venganoor in Thiruvananthapuram on August 16.
